PURPOSE

To help overcome the greatest challenge our city has ever faced, working groups – or “strike teams” comprised of community leaders – are heading the COVID-19 Community Action response.

These groups are focused on immediate areas of impact – Federal and State Government Advocacy; Philanthropy; Food Security and Shelter; Business and Employment; and Social Services.

The groups are recommending and establishing measures to ease the pandemic challenge, plus identifying resources to benefit our community. In addition to relying on their own experience and expertise, the groups are supported by the City of San Antonio and Bexar County.

WORKING GROUPS

Federal and State Government Advocacy

Every state and municipality is going to seek government funding, so it’s essential that we specify what financial assistance our community needs and make sure we have a “seat at the table.”

PHILANTHROPY

This doesn’t mean establishing a new fund to provide community assistance. Rather, it’s a process to inform existing foundations and philanthropists as to how they can play a role for either a specific purpose or a common purpose.

FOOD SECURITY AND SHELTER

The San Antonio Food Bank is being called on to feed 120,000 families, so securing enough food for those in need is of critical importance. The community must also deal with the thousands who are past due on their rent and those living on our city’s streets.

BUSINESS AND EMPLOYMENT

The goal is to help small businesses survive the economic downturn and retain their employees, and it’s also about helping these businesses get re-established once this emergency passes.

SOCIAL SERVICES

It’s important that the needs of the so-called “safety net” are being met, especially those with special needs, the elderly and children in low-income families so that parents can earn a living.
